The Bees at The Junction

Attended our first concert in Cambridge on Sunday night: The Bees at The Junction. M* almost didn't make it because of classwork, but he decided an hour break from studying was allowed. If I wasn't familiar with this English band from the Isle of Wight, their sound and their look, would have me guessing that they were from the States—maybe the South. While I had noticed country-esque aspects to some of their songs, their albums sound more polished/produced than the live act. The various 1960's bands that influenced the sound of their first two albums could still be heard, and they actually presented some jam-band tendencies which pleased M* greatly. I think our favorite song was a cover of the Os Mutantes song A Minha Menina.

We were impressed with the bands multi-instrumentality. For example, Paul Butler, the lead singer and one of the two founding members, played guitar, drums, sax, percussion and trumpet. While not a band that I was jonesing to see, they put on a good show and it was really nice to see live music. I receive email updates about bands performing in London, but so very, very, very few stop in Cambridge.
